Audience Response Systems, Effectiveness:
What makes an
audience response system effective.
|
|
|
 |
| |
| So, what makes an audience response system so
effective ,and why has it become so popular in interactive
meetings? The reason is: it's an excellent way to
engage an audience. Few presentation methods can
be so subtle, yet so engaging. |
| |
| There are a number of websites today that list
the benefits of using an audience response system.
So, rather than be repetitive, we will hone in on the three most
important reason for using the technology, and back our
claims with a few real world examples. |
| |
| Reason One: |
| This simple little device, a wireless keypad,
provides a way for your audience to communicate with you (the
presenter) in an extremely quick, efficient and accurate manner.
Although the term "feedback" is overused, the concept of
feedback is fundamental to an audience response system's
effectiveness. |
| |
| When an audience uses keypads to send their
opinion, people are in fact communicating with the presenter.
Without an audience response system, communication is typically one way. . . presenter
to audience. But, when audience members communicate using keypads,
a loop from the audience to the presenter is established.
As a result, the meeting's dynamics can change drastically.
So, the number one reason why audience response
systems are so effective is because they become a conduit for
communication from the audience to the presenter. |
| |
| Reason Two: |
| The second most important factor that
contributes to audience response system effectiveness is
that it is a highly focused, structured 'conversation'.
By 'conversation' we mean to say that when someone votes by
entering a number on his keypad, it is just as though he
is stating out loud, the words that are on screen that
correspond to the number he entered. |
| |
| So again, this simple device, provides
an awesome power -- the power of spoken word. But,
rather than lengthy and often ambiguous thoughts that are
typical of verbal communications, what you get is brief, clear,
and therefore efficient communication. |
| |
| Reason Three: |
| The third basic reason why audience response systems
are effective is that they bring social equality. An
audience is nothing more than a gathering of people. And
where people gather, there is always a social structure.
We typical see two groups -- the dominators and the dominated.
Dominators will appear to speak for the entire group. But
rarely, is their opinion that of the majority. |
| |
| When the dominators put forth their view, the
dominated tend to remain silent. And therefore, the
dominator's view goes unchallenged and is ultimately accepted as
truth. But, when you give everyone a keypad, you
will hear everyone's voice (in the form of a graph). With
an audience response system, the social hierarchy is torn
down. Everyone now has an equal voice. |

| Below are a few examples that support our
assertions. All stories in the examples are true
events. However, company names have been omitted due to
the sensitive nature of their internal issues. |
